Introduction to Model UN
New to Model UN? Start here for a plain-English overview of what a conference is and how committee works.
What is Model UN?
Model United Nations is an academic simulation in which students step into the roles of delegates representing countries (or, in crisis committees, individual figures) to debate real-world issues. Delegates research their assignment, collaborate to draft solutions, and practice diplomacy, public speaking, and negotiation.
At AHPMUN, every committee is run by a team of student chairs who guide debate, keep time, and evaluate delegates throughout the weekend.
How a committee works
Most committees move through a familiar rhythm: delegates give opening speeches, form blocs with like-minded countries, and work toward a written outcome — a resolution in a General Assembly, or a series of directives in a crisis committee.
- Roll call — chairs confirm who is present
- Speakers list & moderated caucuses — formal debate on the topic
- Unmoderated caucuses — delegates negotiate and write together
- Voting — the committee adopts its final document
What you need to know first
You do not need experience to participate. Beginner-friendly General Assemblies are designed for first-time delegates, while crisis and specialized committees offer a challenge for veterans. The most important thing is preparation and a willingness to speak up.
