Delegate Training Guide

A step-by-step guide to research, position papers, parliamentary procedure, and public speaking.

Researching your assignment

Strong delegates know their country and topic inside out. Start with your nation’s history, alliances, and policy positions, then read the committee background guide closely to understand the scope of debate.

  • Learn your country’s stance on each topic
  • Identify potential allies and opposing blocs
  • Note specific facts, dates, and figures you can cite
  • Draft solutions before you arrive

Writing a position paper

A position paper summarizes your country’s perspective and proposed solutions for each topic. A clear paper typically covers the background of the issue, your nation’s policy, and concrete actions you support.

See our dedicated Position Papers page for formatting requirements and deadlines.

Parliamentary procedure

Procedure keeps debate orderly. You will use motions to set the agenda, open caucuses, and move to voting. Don’t worry about memorizing everything — chairs will guide you, and confidence grows quickly once committee begins.

Public speaking tips

Speak clearly, make eye contact, and structure each speech around one or two key points. It is better to say something concise and substantive than to fill time. Every speech is a chance to build your bloc and move the committee toward your solution.
